BBC Interview: Legislation should ensure that police use of facial recognition is proportionate – Dr Asress Adimi Gikay

"At the moment, UK police have the authority to assess whether their use of technology in specific instances is proportionate and necessary. As long as it falls within the realm of law enforcement, they are permitted to use it. However, more needs to be done to prevent misuse," Dr Asress Adimi Gikay explained in a BBC interview regarding concerns over AI technology.

Dr Gikay emphasised that in the European Union, recent regulations allow live facial recognition only for serious, specifically listed crimes. "Although unnecessarily restrictive in my view, some form of limitation should be introduced in the UK to ensure police use the technology only for serious crimes," he added.

On the 13th September 2024, Dr Gikay has also published this opinion piece in the EU Observer where he critically examines the European Union's AI regulations. While acknowledging the importance of protecting civil liberties, Dr Gikay believes the current rules may overly constrain the effective use of AI technologies, particularly when it comes to maintaining public security.
