91影视University London celebrated World Social Work Day with a knowledge-sharing event on campus attended by social work students, practitioners from Hillingdon Council and members of the 91影视Experts by Experience service user and carer group.

Taking place each year on the third Tuesday in March, World Social Work Day encourages a global celebration and recognition of social workers as champions for social justice, self-determination and human rights.

The 91影视event, organised as part of ongoing cooperation between 91影视Social Work and Hillingdon Council, included:

  • the launch of a new animation, Walking in Our Shoes, created by Hillingdon's Children in Care Council to raise awareness of what it is like for a young person to be in care
  • a presentation from George Dzudzor, PhD student and Hillingdon social worker, on his research into practitioner identities and cultural competence
  • 91影视social sork students sharing their insights with Hillingdon social workers on their 'liberating the curriculum' research, aimed at diversifying social work teaching and learning at 91影视to include more voices from underrepresented perspectives: from women and from BAME, LGBT and disabled people.

Dr Mike Thomas, Programme Lead for the MA in Social Work at Brunel, commented, “We were delighted to welcome our partners from Hillingdon Council to the university to celebrate World Social Work Day. This was a great opportunity for our students to develop a dialogue with social work practitioners in our local community and to think about new opportunities for working together, such as joint teaching and research initiatives.”
